In late February and early March, Manstein managed to retake the Ukrainian city of Kharkov (today Kharkiv), and the frontline stabilized near the Russian city of Kursk, some 420 miles (670 km) northwest of Stalingrad and 286 miles (460 km) south of Moscow.
